This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Yoruba Demographics
[edit]Hello @Eruditescholar, Please note that the Author you cited in your Population edit of Yoruba People page is not reliable and seems to be unilateral and unsourced declaration. Besides, if you add up the population figures they will fall short of the 45 million you are trying to input. I think CIA world fact book should be more reliable than unilateral declaration by an author? Thank you Ppdallo (talk) 16:46, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Ppdallo. The two sources I added give the same population estimate. Both are different in varying degrees. While the website's reliability might be arguable, the book source is authored and edited by at least three different writers. The 1990s/2010 population estimate in the existing source is outdated. I'm very positive that the most accurate population estimate is much more than 30 million and closer to 45 million as stated in 2019/2020 citations I added. If you can find other recent and reliable sources to support your edit, that'll be fine. Eruditescholar (talk) 18:09, 30 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Eruditescholar, The sources you added do not arrive at the same estimate. The issue here is about authority of sources and timing. The CIA world fact book estimate is for the year 2020 also and more authoritative than any number of authors put together so far as they do not cite a more reliable source because demographics is beyond the authority of a writer. Thanks Ppdallo (talk) 19:19, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Ppdallo To clarify: The data in the CIA world fact book is reliable and it does not contradict the citations I added. It only needs to be updated and referenced properly. It does not explicitly state Yoruba's population as 30 million. It only gives an estimate of Nigeria's population as 186 million as of 2016 and projects the national population to grow to about 392 million in 2050. On a general note, this supports an expected growth in human population worldwide. In fact, the CIA projection corroborates my stance that the most recent (2021) population estimate exceeds 30 million. The CIA demographics also excludes relevant data on those living outside Nigeria which will exceed, if not double the 2016 national population estimate. The website and the book in the citations I added give an estimated population of 45 million here: International Development Foundation and in the book here: Africa and it's diaspora languages literature and culture The book's writers are established academics/authorities in their field so there's no question about the reliability of the source. Eruditescholar (talk) 21:01, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- Hi @Eruditescholar, Please read the one page summary of Nigeria country profile of the CIA world fact book and you will see that the estimate is as at 2018 being 203 million with a projected annual growth of 2.54%. That makes Nigeria's total population estimate in 3 years (2018-2021) around 222 million. This translates Yoruba people population of 13.9% to stand at 30,858,000. All other Nigerian tribes populations goes up by corresponding figure as well. Please note that those Yoruba living outside Nigeria are part of the CIA estimates because their migration is as recent as the 60s. Other Nigerian tribes have also migrated to some countries as well, some even centuries before the CIA estimates. On the issue of the book's writers being established academics/authorities in their fields(not demographics) that still does not confer on them the same level of authority on demographics as the CIA world fact book. I would be glad if we copy and move this conversation to the Yoruba talk page, please.Ppdallo (talk) 22:20, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- The information you are stating on the pdf summary is not evident on the main page here: Nigeria: CIA World Fact Book The 2021 Nigerian population estimate of 219,463,862 suggests the Yoruba population is approximately 34 million (after multiplying by 15.5%) and it excludes diaspora. An issue here is differing population estimates by the same publisher. I deem the data on the webpage more accurate than the one on the pdf summary. Eruditescholar (talk) 23:12, 2 May 2021 (UTC)
- It is here;[1], quite glaringly. Just Follow the "Nigeria country profile" link and you will see "one page summary". I don't know where you got 15.5% from. But please note that what ever population estimate you multiply by whatever percentage to arrive at Yoruba population will equally apply to each Nigerian tribe with respect to its assigned percentage. Please at the end of this discussions,it would be expedient to migrate this section to Yoruba talk page for future reference, Thank youPpdallo (talk) 07:21, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- There's no need to repeat the link of the pdf summary through the website link that I specified in my earlier comment. I have already seen both the 13.9% on the pdf summary and 15.5% on the web page. I try my best as an editor to ensure that information provided on Wikipedia is as accurate as possible for the benefit of every user but there may be limitations beyond my control. If you are still denying the obvious, then there may be no need for us to continue this discussion as it may head no where. No hard feelings. Thanks for your time. Eruditescholar (talk) 14:22, 3 May 2021 (UTC)
- Really sorry, my good friend. I actually missed the updated percentages on the CIA main website as opposed to the older PDF on the same website. I appreciate your patience while i also state that my goal as an editor is not any different from yours ie for better and more accurate information on Wikipedia. I concur with your edit reflecting the updated information on the CIA webpage. Please accept my apology for the time and efforts wasted.Ppdallo (talk) 09:39, 4 May 2021 (UTC)
